Insulating In-Mold Gelcoat (Electrical Isolation for Inserts)BACOAT-GEL-I · INSULATING GELCOAT

Carbon fiber is inherently conductive (volume resistivity ~10⁻² Ω·cm); direct contact between embedded brass nuts, aluminum bushings or electrode inserts and the carbon layup causes galvanic corrosion, short circuits and ground loops. A high-resistivity epoxy gelcoat is sprayed onto the mold first, building a 50μm continuous dielectric barrier between the carbon layup and metal inserts.

Volume Resistivity

Insert Corrosion Resistance

No galvanic corrosion vs Al/Cu
Dry Film Thickness

Pinhole-free continuous film
Insert Insulation Resistance
≥100 MΩ
500V DC × 1min no breakdown
Recommended System (carbon parts with metal inserts)
Mold clean (IPA wipe)
→ BACOAT-GEL-I insulating gelcoat 50μm (single cross-wet pass)
→ 60°C bake to tack-free
→ Lay up carbon plies and seat nuts / bushings
→ Autoclave co-cure; demold as insulated structural part
Interlaminar shear ≥50MPa · -40~120°C thermal cycling no cracking · 1000h Al/Cu contact no galvanic corrosion · Surface resistance ≥10¹¹ Ω/sq · Not interchangeable with standard GEL-L
